´ºÓêÖ±²¥ and award-winning Portland-based animation studio LAIKA — known for groundbreaking Oscar®-nominated animated feature films such as Coraline, ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings — today announced an industry partnership to help develop and diversify the region’s creative workforce.

After several weeks of meetings, ideation and planning, Portland City Council approved a resolution today that calls for the city to pursue the development of two Broadway-capable theaters downtown — one on ´ºÓêÖ±²¥â€™s site as part of our Performing Arts and Culture Center proposal, and one on the current site of Keller Auditorium.

The climate crisis has increased the frequency and intensity of wildfires in the western United States. At ´ºÓêÖ±²¥, researchers are working to increase wildfire awareness, prevention and mitigation in the Pacific Northwest, undertaking their effort from different angles, which fits the complexity of the issue.

The new program will reinforce ´ºÓêÖ±²¥â€™s commitment to equity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and its role as a key player in Oregon's thriving Silicon Forest ecosystem. It aims to serve as a model for institutions seeking to bridge the gap between academia and industry and promote diversity in high-tech fields.

´ºÓêÖ±²¥â€™s new School of Earth, Environment, and Society joins together multiple disciplines focused on understanding and addressing some of the most pressing and complex issues of our time from climate change and adaptation to environmental and climate justice to human health and cultural diversity.
